Seemingly it seems that the shipping industry is taking the matter of its Hatch cover maintenance and watertight integrity testing
seriously because we now have a lesser volume of claims but it should
be noted that the number of claims have not hit zero. However with the
increase of transport ships today than it was over a year ago, the
problems of the industry has also increased. The natural problem of the
industry is its fight against rust and to manage it, the ship owners
require the services of specialized teams that are experts in hunting
the leaks that have been caused due to rust and are damaging the ship
and the cargo it transports.
There are still many leak finding teams present today that are using the old methods which is famously known as the water hose leak testing method. Not only is this method outdated, it is slow, costly and more damaging to the ship. Since it requires the ship to be doused with water inch to inch, the constant dousing of water can spread the rust even more and this would result in more leaks later on than they were before this team was called for inspection and repairs. As the rust gets more room to spread on the wet metal of the ship’s body, it starts eating away the metal more quickly and creates more leaks than there were before. Hence in this way the team would be called again and the result would be the same again.
In today’s fast paced world there is no room to repeat the same thing again and again and to invest the money on the same again. Hence the need for the ultrasonic leak detector became indispensable as it saves time, money and manpower too. Using the device a ship’s crew can run the test even when the ship has already set sail. Using the device, the hatch covers can be easily tested by placing the generator in the cargo hold and turning it on without the need to open the hatch covers or removing the goods. The leaks can be identified and the repairs can be applied by the staff on a sailing ship. The use of the ultrasonic device isn’t restricted to test hatch covers but it can also be used for cable transit areas watertight testing. Using the device every hole and leak in the ducts can also be found and repairing them would become very easy.
